Import Alert: Live-Breeding Sheep and Goats from Canada Now Eligible for Import into the U.S.
Issuance Date: April 7, 2022
Effective date: April 6, 2022
Beginning April 6, 2022, live-breeding sheep and goats will be eligible for import into the United States from Canada. Importers must provide supporting documentation showing the scrapie-free status of the Canadian herd of origin at the time an import permit application is submitted to USDA APHIS. Importers must also contact the U.S. port of entry at least 10 business days before the intended date of arrival. Post-entry requirements about traceback of imported animals and recordkeeping will apply. Click here for additional import and post-entry requirements on the USDA APHIS Live Animal Imports website. The Canadian Sheep Breeders' Association has received a request from breeders of the Black Nose Valais sheep to recognize this breed for registrations. Canadian breeders of the Black Nose Valais are invited to submit comments to the CSBA office by December 31, 2021. Comments may be forwarded to CSBA by email at office@sheepbreeders.ca or through our contact us section on the website.
